Week 1: Introduction

Hello!  My name is Taylor, and I’m a senior here at the University of Oklahoma.  I actually “graduated,” left Norman, and began a full time job in Kansas City, Missouri after the Fall 2014 semester, but unbeknownst to me, needed one more upper division humanities, so here I am! I am  a psychology major, and hope to continue my education with a masters degree in the future, but wanted to get into the workforce for now.  Adjusting to a full time job out of college has been interesting and fun at the same time.  I have loved becoming a completely independent adult, and have probably changed more in the last 7 months of doing so than I have my entire life.  I never realized how much you learn when you finally enter the “real world.”  It’s been a crazy experience, and I am nothing but thankful for it. I will likely move back to Oklahoma in the future, but for now I am pretty content with my temporary home.

I was born in Washington D.C., but have lived in Oklahoma since I was two years old, and loved every minute of it.  I grew up in Tulsa, just a couple hours away from Norman, and have been going to OU football games since I can remember.  Fall is my favorite season for that exact reason.  I absolutely love when the weather gets a little cooler, the leaves start changing colors, and every Saturday I have a reason to dress in crimson and cream and cheer on the Sooners.  I have the fondest memories of getting to go to football games with my dad and brothers growing up, so when it came time for me to choose a college, it wasn’t exactly a tough choice.  And even though I’ll be in Kansas City, I’ll do my best to make it to as many home games as possible, and of course OU/TX.  I wouldn’t miss the greatest weekend of the year for anything in the world!

  1. I am so glad that this class worked out for you there in Kansas City, Taylor... it's not like it is all that far from Norman, but you sure would not want to be commuting back-and-forth for classes, ha ha. I don't know what your experience will be like, but since I read the OU Daily every day online and keep up with all the OU Twitter feeds, I have this weird sense of living in two places at once, since i actually know MORE about what is going on in Norman than I do about the tiny town where I am living right now in North Carolina. And since I'll be sharing all kinds of campus news through the class Twitter feed that you'll see there in D2L, you'll know something about what's going on in Norman too... and unlike me, you could easily get there for a weekend if something really exciting is going on! It kinds of drives me crazy sometimes reading about events I would LOVE to attend, but knowing that it would be a very loooooong drive from North Carolina to get there. :-)

  2. Taylor, I love that you were seriously born a Sooner fan unlike me. My sister went to UT when I was younger, so I thought I always loved the longhorns and burnt orange, silly me! Then, I visited OU and fell in love with it! I agree with you in that I love the crimson and cream and I love when the weather gets a little cooler and the trees change color in the fall. These are some of my favorite things about OU and Oklahoma! I could go without the harsh winters as I am from Texas and a baby when it comes to the cold, but I like it here all the same!

  3. Taylor, Kansas City is a nice place. Have you had a chance to do anything interesting there? It is very handy that we have modern inventions such as TV and the Internet. It's too bad that you can't be in Oklahoma for the football season, but you can cheer on the Sooners from afar. And its great that you can take this class from Kansas City!

  4. I am from Tulsa, Oklahoma also. I have never been a big football fan nor have I been to a football game. After reading your introduction, I feel like I will miss out if I didn’t go to at least one game. Have you done anything exciting in Kansas City so far? Do you enjoy being in Oklahoma or Kansas more?

  5. Hello Taylor,
One question that I want to ask you is, how was the adjustment from college to a full time job? My mom keeps getting on to me about what I plan to do after I graduate, or what exactly it is I want to do with my life. I need to figure that out soon, since this is my last year of college. I see you had a tradition of going to all of the football games. My grandpa and my uncles used to always go to all of the games and would exclude all of the ladies, because they said that it was "men time". However, I did partake in a tradition with my family. Going to the University of Oklahoma has been a tradition in my family, first starting with my grandparents. So this university has a lot of history in my family.

  6. Hello Taylor,
What is the feeling to become a psychologist? I think it is awesome to explore others’ thoughts. Psychology is super hard for me. In my freshman year, I tried to study Psychology, however, there were so many complicated words need to remember that I struggle to get a B. I can still remember the self-consciousness concept. Anyway, it is a hard but fun major. I hope your work is running well.

  7. Hey Taylor,

I think it's so cool that you are a working independent adult and actually enjoying it. I am quite fearful of what the future holds. The "real world" scares me. I am pre-physical therapy so after I graduate I hope to go onto physical therapy school. If I do not get in I am not sure what I will do. I look forward to reading more of your blog posts!

  8. Hey Tyler I am pretty sure that your uncle is my doctor. He gave me some stretches to do that helped fix my shoulder and saved me a ton of money so we are on pretty good terms. As far as your introduction, that really stinks that they goofed up on your scheduling that badly that you had to come back to college. I hope that your busy schedule does not wear you down to much!

  9. Hi Taylor! I can tell that you are a huge Oklahoma Sooner fan. They have been doing really well this season so far. I hope their run continues. What do you think about Mayfield? Wow, it is crazy that you had to come back to college after “graduating.” You seem to be dealing with it well and have made a positive experience out of it. Hope your semester is good!

  10. Hi Taylor! Reading your story was pretty inspiring- I can’t imagine what it is like to finally be living the life in the real world! I think it is pretty great that you are such a huge Sooner fan! I’ve always been a Sooner fan but not that committed and I’m pretty much the first one in my family that will be graduating from OU!

  11. Hello Taylor! I bet Kansas City is a fun place to live. I was there once to cheer on the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Steelers won, so Chiefs fans were not too happy with me around. Good pick on one more upper division humanities. People think it is a little weird when I saw I am taking an Epics of India class, but oh well … They do not know what they are missing!

  12. Hi, Taylor! So cool that you were born in DC but grew up in Tulsa! My two favorite places! haha So sorry to hear about the credit hour confusion. I know that that must have been difficult to deal with! I'm happy that you get a chance to learn and work all at the same time though! :)

  13. Fall is my absolute favorite season as well! I just love the cooler temperatures and just knowing that my favorite holidays, Halloween and Christmas are just right around the corner. And of course, who could leave out football! I think it's so cool that you're already working in your field and out of the state. I always say I want to leave Oklahoma and live elsewhere but, I have a feeling that I'd want to stay here. It's my home and I would miss it so much.

  14. That's crazy that you had to complete one more class after graduation! I'd be so mad! But then again I think you chose a great course to take, especially since you live out of state. You talk about the real world, and I cringe! I admire that you have grown so much and have taken on the challenge of becoming an independent adult. To me, it sounds scary to become an adult. I know I'll get there one day, but I hope I make an easy transition. Good luck with work!

  15. Loved your description about this time of year! Fall is great! That stinks that you had to complete one more class but it sounds like you are making the most of it. I've been working almost full time now during school and it's changed the way I see school.

  16. Wow. I am going to graduate at the end of this semester. My major is also psychology and now I feel like I need to make sure that I am truly going to graduate. I just think it is crazy how you are having to take this last class after being graduated for quite a while now. I hope you enjoy this class at least!

  17. Taylor your graduation story is exactly what I'm terrified of. I'm supposed to graduate in May, and I think I'm on track, but I have nightmares about missing a certain class or doing something wrong... It'll probably work out! Anyway, fall is also my favorite season, as is spring! It's cool that you grew up in Tulsa- I grew up in Bartlesville, which is less than an hour north of Tulsa! I'm glad to hear that your adjustment to the real world has gone well, since that's a transition I'll be making myself fairly soon! Have a great rest of the semester!

  18. Hey Taylor. Sorry about your delayed graduation. I am glad you were able to find an online class that fulfilled your requirement. I used to live in Kansas City, MO when I was a kid. Its a great place to be. I actually thought about going to UMKC, but University of Ok seemed to fit much better. I hope your class goes well and good luck on your graduation!

  19. Hi Taylor,
That is odd that you were allowed to graduate without all the credits needed. Good thing online classes are a thing now. Fall is my favorite season also. The cooler weather is certainly a nice change. Going to the OU football games with your family must have been really fun. I agree with you, OU/tX is certainly one of the best weekends of the year. Good luck with your job and this semester.

  20. I would be very upset thinking I had graduated and then finding out that I still had one more class to take! I love Kansas City! My mother is from Trenton, Missouri, but her family lives in KC. My favorite place is definitely the plaza. There are so many fountains, AND my favorite vegan/vegetarian restaurant called “Eden Alley” is located there!
